WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Commerce today appointed Gregory W. Booth, President and Chief Executive Officer of Zippo Manufacturing Company, Bradford, Pa., to the Department’s 2012 Manufacturing Council, according to U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson. Representative Thompson initiated a letter in support of Mr. Booth’s candidacy in July of 2011 that was signed by Senator Bob Casey along with twelve other members of congress from the Commonwealth. Both Thompson and Booth praised the news upon hearing of the Department’s announcement.

Local reps take case for 219 to governor’s office
April 12, 2012Representatives from three counties met with Gov. Tom Corbett’s staff Wednesday to discuss the progress of completing Route 219 from Meyersdale to Somerset

Kathleen Duffy Bruder, deputy chief of staff to Corbett, Jim Ritzman, deputy secretary for planning for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and county commissioners from Somerset, Cambria and Garrett County, Md., attended the meeting. Staff from the offices of state Sens. John Wozniak and Richard Kasunic attended as well as representatives from the North/South Appalachian Highway Coalition.

March 27, 2012Legislation allows use of toll credits

CUMBERLAND — The U.S. Senate passed its version of a new transportation bill, Sens. Ben Cardin, Barbara Mikulski, Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller announced Wednesday.
The bill contains language written by Cardin that would allow the U.S. Route 219 construction project from Somerset to Meyersdale, Pa., to move forward.

The NEXUS Niagara grassroots marketing campaign was officially unveiled to partners and local media outlets on March 1, 2012, during an hour long roundtable discussion on the benefits of trusted travel and RFID-technology at area international border crossings.
The event was held at Empire State Development’s Downtown Buffalo offices.

OLEAN — If the Route 219 Expressway is going to get back on track, state lawmakers based in Western New York “need to keep beating the drums,” Sam Hoyt, regional president of Empire State Development, said Tuesday in Olean.
He agreed the long-sought north-south expressway corridor between Springville and Salamanca would improve the region’s economic development potential.
