Legislation allows use of toll credits

Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — The U.S. Senate passed its version of a new transportation bill, Sens. Ben Cardin, Barbara Mikulski, Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller announced Wednesday.

The bill contains language written by Cardin that would allow the U.S. Route 219 construction project from Somerset to Meyersdale, Pa., to move forward.

Sens. Robert Casey and Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania were involved in the joint effort.

The prohibition on toll credit usage for 13 states of the Appalachian Regional Commission and their Appalachian Development Highway System was reversed.

This change, if passed by the House of Representatives, will allow PennDOT to proceed with the U.S. 219 construction project from Somerset to Meyersdale, PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch told the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce in January.
