GREAT VALLEY — Recently, and without any fanfare, new signs have been appearing along Route 219 in the towns of Great Valley and Ellicottville designed to remind motorists that state and federal agencies are blocking extension of the Route 219 Expessway.

Two new signs are currently visible to northbound motorists: one across from Southern Tier West in the town of Great Valley and another just north of Ellicottville.

The signs replaced ones that were put up more than 12 years ago that highlighted the death toll from motor vehicle accidents on the two-lane highway between Salamanca and Springville.

Originally, the group had wanted to place crosses at the scene of fatal accidents along Route 219, but the state Department of Transportation nixed that idea. A memorial program for Route 219 accident victims and their families was also held at Ellicottville Central School, Mr. Krause said.

It started with a group of people sitting in a coffee shop talking about the terrible toll Route 219 traffic deaths had taken on area families.
