HOLLIDAYSBURG – Despite competitive proposals from many of the eight companies hoping to capture the contract for Phase 2 of Route 219, the apparent low bidder still came in with a price below engineer estimates at a bid opening Friday.

Joseph B. Fay Co., of suburban Pittsburgh, is willing to do the next phase of four-lane limited access highway between Somerset and Meyersdale for just under $67.5 million – or about $15 million less than anticipated.

Fay, based in Tarentum. Allegheny County, is the general contractor for Phase 1 – earth moving portion – of the $300 million project which is still ongoing.

The contract could be awarded in about a month for this second phase, which involves construction of a total of 11 bridges along the 12-mile stretch that will extend the four-lane to within a few miles of the Maryland line.
