Letter: SBU views four-lane Route 219 as critical

Olean Times Herald (October 10, 2014)

I respect the work that Jeff Belt has done to represent our economic development needs within the region. He is a dedicated advocate for our great Olean community. At the same time, I need to express my concern that continued delay on the completion of Route 219 creates levels of significant hardship.

At St. Bonaventure University we have experienced the tragic result of the unsafe status of a highway that reverts to two lanes through crowded conditions in certain seasons. More than one fatality on the stretch between Springville and Ellicottville has involved families of our students.

We also know the subtle bias that has many Buffalo residents seeing our town as the far side of the moon in terms of time to travel here. Every small or large reduction in travel time is a boon for those of us with constant business between the two cities.

Finally, our work with Hilbert College creates an even more urgent need for safe and timely travel on that road. I hope that the debate now going forward will bring us to a win-win solution.
