Highway to Bypass Johnstown

RIDGWAY — A move to shift Continental 1, the proposed north-south trade route stretching from Toronto to Miami, away from the long-preferred Route 219 through Cambria and part of Somerset County, to an easterly route, has come to an abrupt halt.

In a decision hashed out Friday in Ridgway, the bi-national coalition of business, community and government leaders agreed to abandon a push to shift the trade route designation, long proposed for Route 219 through Pennsylvania, east from DuBois through Clearfield County, rather than continue on Route 219 into Cambria County.

Instead, after hearing from representatives of Somerset County and the region’s planning and development commission, the Continental 1 board agreed to an alternate route to the west.

While 219 in northern Cambria County will no longer be part of the designated trade route, the southern half will be included.
