Yesterday the Republican leadership of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee unveiled a multi-year surface transportation bill that would authorize federal highway programs through 2016. The measure consolidates or eliminates 70 individual programs. The bill retains the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS) as a separate program with a dedicated funding stream.

Hopes for Route 219 receive boost

SOMERSET — A major hurdle toward completion of Route 219 in Somerset County was crossed late Tuesday with legislation allowing use of toll credits successfully included in the pending federal highway bill.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg, wrote the legislation nearly a year ago allowing toll credits to be used as matching funds for routes in the Appalachian Development Highway System, of which Route 219 is a part.

Route 219 Project Back On Track?

This just may be the year that the Route 219 Expressway gets back on track in Cattaraugus County.

Continental 1, the lobbying group pushing for a seamless four-lane highway between Toronto and Miami, has started a petition drive asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers to include the necessary money for environmental studies along the entire 28-mile corridor from Springville to Salamanca in order to get the necessary federal wetlands permits. The cost is estimated at $6.5 million and could take two to three years to study.
